Software Engineer

As our Software Engineer, you will work in a growing in-house team (10+) developing Onalytica’s online software services and product lines. You will work on building great features, writing great code, and simply doing a great job. You can demonstrate having worked on one or more completed projects and have experience across all the (agile) software development lifecycle stages needed to release a product, and have been essential to those projects’ successes. You should have a track record of consistently rendering clear technical judgment and routinely considering project-level issues. You can show examples of innovation, a consistent delivery track record, and unique contributions beyond the call of duty. You have provided technical guidance to or supervised others in your team unit and are seen as a champion who can consider both internal and external aspects of a project and ensure they are handled correctly and with consistently sound judgment.

Your main responsibilities will include:

Operations Engineer

You will provide operations support across the disciplines of deployment, activation, administration, management, monitoring and optimisation of web and crawler services in a production and pre-production environment.

You will be responsible for troubleshooting system problems and monitoring issues resulting from bugs, configuration issues and/or system instability. You will have to be detail oriented and organised while effectively tracking your work and providing regular updates and feedback. We have a rapidly expanding infrastructure and the need for frequent and rapid deployment, plus daily monitoring is essential to the smooth operation and growth of the business.

This position requires a 24*7 operations and service delivery mindset. Additionally, it requires an agile customer-focused individual who is comfortable with a diverse and changing environment and who will not get intimated while being faced with complex challenges. While meeting schedules set by management, you should have a demonstrated ability to identify problems, determine root cause, collect and compile data from various sources, determine the solution and drive implementation.

You will come in to this role with a combined technical understanding of web application and crawler service delivery processes while leveraging ‘pragmatic’ incident and problem management skills to quickly resolve issues and improve methods to proactively identify and prevent future occurrences.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Operating high performance systems and applications
  • Deploying, configuring, supporting and enhancing existing systems working with Data Centre / Network Engineers, Developers, QA and Programme Management resources
  • Monitoring system growth and performance, and interacting with a range of technical staff both to troubleshoot issues as well as determine requirements for tools, automation and monitoring
  • Monitoring system logs, responding to events and alerts and taking action to ensure that the applications continue to function in an optimum manner
  • Continuously reviewing and recommending solutions that improve service, availability, reliability and performance in a cost effective manner
  • Analysing incidents to determine root cause and mitigation plans. Driving automation into service management tasks and processes wherever appropriate

To be considered for this position, you will have:

  • 5+ years of experience in a 24x7 ‘hands-on’ operations environment
  • In-depth knowledge of overall web-based systems, architecture and application servers running in a Windows environments
  • Technical awareness in .Net/managed code, SQL Server 2008, ASP.NET (ASP.NET MVC a plus) and other Microsoft platforms deploying large scale web applications
  • 4-5 years of working knowledge of web-based services, operations, system design, data centre/infrastructure and communications technologies
  • Experience of creating and maintaining metrics, status reports and trending

SQL Server DBA

Effective use of databases play a key role in Onalytica’s quest to transform the online debate into valuable insight. We have approximately 65 TB of storage and anticipate this to grow beyond 100 TB by the end of the year. The growth is likely to be ever increasing. We own and operate our own hardware in a state-of-the art data centre.

We are looking to recruit a SQL Server DBA to work closely with both our development and operations teams to ensure the overall quality of our database operations.

This is a rare opportunity to work with very large data stores within a highly transactional environment.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Leading database design, query/performance tuning.
  • Providing guidance and support for developers in relation to data access
  • Analysing data growth and storage requirements
  • Working with our data centre operations team to test new cutting edge hardware

In order to be considered for this position, you will have:

  • Expertise in SQL Server 2008, especially T-SQL
  • Experience within a highly transactional environment
  • Experience in software development against large databases on SQL Server

Crawl Engineer

Here at Onalytica we run our own in-house crawlers that index hundreds of GB every day. We operate our own state-of-the-art data centre.

We are now looking to recruit a Crawl Engineer to run, monitor and analyse our crawling/indexing system.

You will work closely with our hardware/data centre engineers, database specialists and software developers to ensure the quality on all aspects of crawler operations.

This position represents a rare opportunity to work on the cutting edge of large scale crawling/search and information retrieval.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Operating, maintaining and delivering our inbound crawler functionality
  • Ongoing analysis and improvement of crawler design and functionality
  • Specifying, planning and participating in development of crawler components

In order to be considered for this position, you will have:

  • Experience in developing/running large scale crawlers/indexers
  • An understanding of all relevant theoretical aspects of crawling, search and information retrieval
  • Relevant experience with, and understanding of, Internet protocols and standards such as HTTP and DNS
  • Software development experience (Microsoft stack)
  • Experience with relational databases, preferably SQL Server 2008 (you will be supported by DBAs and developers with good knowledge of SQL Server, but you still have to be really good)

Front End Developer

We are developing the next generation platform for analysing the online debate, making it more available to a wider range of users; we are now in a position to recruit a Front End Developer to ensure a robust, elegant and beautiful application for our clients.

You should be an outstanding front end coder with an impressive knowledge of HTML and CSS, and the various ways these can be implemented in a wide variety of browsers. Of course, you will also be expected to keep up to date with the latest HTML5 and CSS3 specifications, and be able to advise on which can be sensibly implemented now.

You should have a good appreciation of design and a keen eye for detail. You understand progressive enhancement and strive to ensure UI looks beautiful in each browser, but understand that usability comes before pixel perfection.

The DOM is your friend, and you’re at home writing some ground breaking (unobtrusive) Javascript. We use jQuery, but you should be equally at home without it. You will also get the opportunity to work with some impressive software engineers, so the ability to speak .Net, C# and ASP.Net MVC would be a bonus.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Working closely with the User Experience Designer
  • Building UI elements to specification
  • Interfacing Front end UI with Core system
  • Constantly testing and striving for perfection

In order to be considered for this position, you wil:

  • Have superb CSS and HTML skills, with a keen interest in CSS3 and HTML5 development
  • Have world Class Javascript skills; used to working with jQuery
  • Subscribe to the ethos of the Semantic web. This should be reflected in your markup
  • Agree with the following statement: “Web sites do NOT have to look the same in every browser, but should be beautiful in every browser” - You should build in progressive enhancement to your markup
  • Have the ability to follow a flat design, following the spirit of the thing rather pixel perfect copies at the cost of usability. You should be able to design in the browser within the style of the original design

  • Have an interest in Usability & Accessibility and the ability to understand how their markup impacts on these issues

Finance Manager

We have an exciting new opportunity for an experienced Finance Manager/Professional to join Onalytica and run the finances for the company. This is very much a hands-on role to provide invoicing, payment processing, bank reconciliation and general book keeping capabilities, together with a range of financial management services including management and financial accounting.

As the Finance Manager you will take responsibility for the finances of the company working with the operational leads and senior management team. You will also be well supported by our highly qualified and responsive external accountants.

The role will cover the full spectrum of finance responsibilities from hands-on invoice, payment and expense processing, payroll, monthly management accounts and internal controls through to preparation of budgets and forecasts.

The emphasis being hands-on and we are seeking a practical, experienced and versatile finance professional.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Processing of invoices, payments, expenses and payroll
  • Reconciliation of all cash transactions to the companies bank account
  • All budgeting, cash flow, production of management accounts, preparation of audit files, VAT returns, maintenance of statutory records and internal controls
  • Liaison with the company accountants for annual statutory accounts and corporation tax computations
  • Monthly analysis of overheads and comparisons with budget, preparation of financial forecasts and annual budgets in conjunction with senior management
  • Enhance and/or develop upon the current system of internal controls, cash management processes including weekly bank reconciliations and monthly cash forecasting
  • Liaison with company's bankers

In order to be considered for this position, you will have:

  • A qualification as an accountant or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrable ability to cover all aspects of the role from book keeping, invoice and payment processing through to controls and forecasting
  • Experience of company reporting, including management reporting, and budgeting
  • Experience of Sage or equivalent financial package
